Q: Do you accept plastic bags for recycling?
A: Unfortunately, at this time we are unable to accept plastic bags for recycling.
A new law, AB 2449, requires drugstores and grocery stores of at least 10,000 square feet to offer at-store recycling programs for plastic bags. As an alternative to plastic bags, some stores now have reusable bags available for purchase, generally made of light-weight, washable material for convenience. These reusable bags usually come with money-saving incentives, as many stores offer a discount each time a customer uses a reusable bag in lieu of a paper or plastic carryout bag.
So on your next trip to the grocery store, don’t forget your shopping list and plastic bags to recycle!
Q: What can I do about people taking my recyclables?
A: Allied Waste understands scavenging is a nuisance (noise), an invasion of privacy and impacts our local cities diversion rates. From our perspective, we consider scavenging to be theft. Allied Waste is willing to support the cities in their efforts to prosecute any individual or individuals that are caught in the act of scavenging recyclable materials from our containers and who may also be violating any City ordinances in the process.
If you are currently having an issue with your recycling materials (this includes from residential tubs, business containers and loose cardboard) being taken by someone other than Allied Waste we suggest you contact your local Code Enforcement:

Q: How can I order additional containers for trash, yard trimmings and recycling?
A: Trash: Residents are billed based on the size of can and the number of trash containers. In some areas your rate may depend on the placement of your container(s). Residents provide their own container(s) or they may rent a 64- or 96-gallon container from Allied for trash service. Call (650) 592-2411 for details.
Most household materials can be recycled. By using smaller or fewer trash containers, residents can save money on their bill.
Yard Trimmings Containers: Residents are provided with one yard-trimmings cart. Residents may call or email requests for additional yard trimmings carts, which can be purchased for $75 per cart or rented on a monthly basis for a minimal fee.
Recycling Containers: Additional materials may be placed in any recycling container as long as paper is kept separate from co-mingled bottles, cans and plastics or exceed 60lbs. Residents can request stickers for recycling containers by email or call at (650) 592-2411.
Q: What is the basis for billing?
A: Billing: Residents are billed for trash services based on the number and size of cans set on the curb or collected from the backyard (for participating cities). Some residents are billed by Allied quarterly in advance of service.
Service Changes: You can change your service level simply by calling the Allied customer service department or by email. 24-hour notice is required.
Vacation Service Fee Credits: For residents billed directly by Allied, a vacation fee credit will be provided to residents who select not to receive service for more than two consecutive weeks. Residents must contact Allied at least two weeks prior to stopping service to ensure proper credit.
Q: Can I request extra service on my pickup day?
A: San Mateo County residents are eligible for two on-call clean-ups per calendar year. We ask that you contact us 10 business days in advance of the desired date of your clean-up. If you have one or two additional bags, please call 24 hours in advance of your service day at (650) 592-2411 to inform us you will have extra material, additional fees do apply.
Q: Where can I drop off my garbage?
A: Allied has two convenient locations for customers. One is the San Carlos Transfer Station at 225 Shoreway Road, San Carlos. This facility, open seven days a week except major holidays, can be reached from the Holly Street or Ralston Avenue turnoffs from Bayshore Freeway. Head east and take Shoreway Road, the frontage road that runs parallel to the Bayshore Freeway. Customers can also take their garbage to Ox Mountain Sanitary Landfill off Highway 92, three miles east of Half Moon Bay. Ox Mountain is open six days a week, excluding Sundays and major holidays. For more information, please call the Transfer Station at (650) 592-0255 or Ox Mountain at (650) 726-4718.
Q: Do you have compost bins?
A: No. But you can obtain a compost bin for your own backyard composting at a discount through the County of San Mateo RecycleWorks. Additional information is available at the RecycleWorks website www.recycleworks.org or by calling the hotline at 1-888-442-2666.
Q: How can I get rid of a refrigerator or freezer?
A: Allied can pick up your refrigerator or freezer as part of your on-call clean-up at no cost to you. If you have exhausted your two clean-ups or do not want to use a clean-up we can pick up your refrigerator or freezer for $90; if you have the certificate showing that the Freon component has been removed, as required by law, the charge is $60. We cannot pick up commercial size refrigerators or freezers. Refrigerator and freezer doors must be removed. DO NOT tape shut. You can also drop off your refrigerator or freezer at the San Carlos Transfer Station or Ox Mountain Sanitary Landfill. To schedule a pick up email us or call (650) 592-2411.
Q: Where do I put my cans and when?
A: Please place your recycling bins and yard trimmings cart at the curb by 6 a.m. on your service day, according to the Recycling Schedule for your city. Your garbage cans should be either at the curb or, if you have backyard service, easily accessible by 6 a.m.
Q: Why wasn't my garbage/recycling bins/yard trimmings cart picked up?
A: For those rare times that Allied does not pick up a customer's garbage/recycling/yard trimmings, the primary reasons are:
* The container was not left at the curb by 6 a.m. or our driver did not have access to your containers.
* The containers were too heavy. There is a 60-pound limit per can. Dirt, concrete, asphalt and rocks should NOT be placed in your trash ca
